Drunk and Disorderly in Ocean City, Maryland: What Is It and What To Do If You've Been Charged

Posted by Steve Rakow | Jul 13, 2026 | 0 Comments

What happens in Ocean City doesn't always stay in Ocean City.

Sometimes, all it takes is a few too many Orange Crushes, and your beach weekend ends with a court date instead of a tan. If you've been charged with what people commonly call a "drunk and disorderly" offense, don't assume the outcome is already decided.

Although many people refer to the offense as "drunk and disorderly," that is more of an umbrella term used to describe a variety of alcohol related offenses. The charges themselves are more specific, like disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, public intoxication, or intoxicated endangerment just to name a few.

Police officers may become involved if they believe someone is:

  • Creating a public disturbance
  • Fighting or threatening others
  • Refusing lawful police commands
  • Blocking traffic or public walkways
  • Trespassing (or refusing to leave the bar)
  • Engaging in behavior that alarms or disturbs others

Each case is unique, and that's why the specific charge depends on the facts and the laws that allegedly apply to your circumstances.

Keep in mind that simply consuming alcohol or appearing intoxicated in public (as long as you are over 21) does not result in criminal charges. Law enforcement officers generally focus on a person's behavior while intoxicated. Typically, its fighting, yelling, damaging property, or creating any sort of disturbance is likely to lead to an arrest. These alcohol related offenses can carry consequence such as fines, license suspensions, and even potential jail time.

Being charged with an alcohol-related offense in Ocean City does not automatically mean you will be convicted. The specific facts of your case matter, like any evidence, witness statements, body camera footage, and the circumstances surrounding your arrest can all impact how your case is resolved. Taking the matter seriously, protecting your rights, and seeking qualified legal guidance can make a significant difference in the outcome of your case.

And what if you were just visiting Ocean City? It happens more often than you think. Steve works with clients from all over the world who were just in town for the weekend, but ended up with an encounter with the legal system that was not on the original vacation itinerary.

Steve has over 29 years of local, criminal defense experience and will explain how the Maryland court process works, what deadlines apply, and what to expect moving forward. Depending on the circumstances, there may also be ways to minimize unnecessary travel during the process.
